Michele Smith Speech Pathology provides a face-to-face, community-based service across the Capricorn Coast, Rockhampton and surrounds. Services provided include Mealtime and swallowing assessment, review, and report writing; development of mealtime support plans; and mealtime support training. I provide a home-visiting service within the Capricorn Coast, Rockhampton and surrounds.
Dysphagia, or swallowing difficulty, can create a major barrier to enjoying safe and enjoyable mealtimes. A mealtime and swallowing assessment aims to identify if a person has dysphagia, recommend safe food textures and fluid thicknesses according to IDDSI guidelines, and provide strategies to ensure mealtimes and swallowing are as safe and enjoyable as possible.
A mealtime support plan is often developed following a mealtime and swallowing assessment. A mealtime support plan includes information about the recommended food textures and fluid thicknesses for a person with dysphagia, appropriate positioning, required mealtime equipment, and support strategies. Mealtime support plans are very important for people with dysphagia to ensure that caregivers and staff know how to make meals that are safe and enjoyable. All mealtime plans are developed using IDDSI terminology.
When a person with dysphagia has a team supporting them, it is important for the whole team to know food texture and fluid thickness recommendations, positioning, equipment and support strategies to ensure the person's safety at mealtimes. I can provide mealtime support plan training to teams.
Several sources of funding may be available to contribute to the cost of services. Michele Smith Speech Pathology is a Registered NDIS Provider and can provide services no matter how your NDIS Plan is managed.
Michele Smith Speech Pathology is also Medicare registered. Depending on your circumstances, assistance may be available through Medicare, private health insurance or My Aged Care.
